MUSIC IN ADIDAM |
|
"The true artist is a sacred performer.
He or she must do the magic that causes others
to participate in conditionally manifested reality in the sacred sense,
or the sense of love, in the sense of self-transcendence, of ecstasy."
~ Avatar Adi Da Samraj, 1984
So spoke Adi Da Samraj (pic right with guitar playing devotee Ray Lynch
in the 1970's) & thus I present here a list of all the musicians who have
been devotees of Adi Da Samraj, informal students, admirers or just
involved with devotees who have recorded or performed for him, because
of Him, inspired by Him or in tribute to him & have, ideally, brought their
music into the spiritual realm ... or, at least, brought the spiritual into
their music. You'll find here short biographies, photos & discographies of
every album devotees or admirers have made or appeared on, Adi Da related or not, & all the musicians
they've worked with, along with links to buy direct from the artist or label when available. When ever I used
to research music in Adidam, particularly famous musicians, I only ever got Ray Lynch, John Wubbenhorst
& "the drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers" (though he's been with Pearl Jam longer). I figured there
must be more. The results snow-balled overnight & surprised me. I'll let you pour through the list & discover
just how busy & prolific, let alone worldy, Adidam devotees & their musical associates actually are ...
(let alone which famous people they've played with)!
I've tried to make this list as comphrehensive as possible but with a 40 plus history of Adidam across the globe
globe with only a 5 year history for myself (I became a 3C devotee June 2010) I'll apologize now for any errors
or omissions, as they are not intentional (& don't hesitate to e-mail me to help me out) particularly as some
of these artists get their first complete discography here & this is the first time such a listing has been made.
Though this listing puts the focus on the individuals of the community,
without His Divine Presence none of this would exist.
This is for His Most Beautiful Divine Presence with love!
Da Da Da
"Adi Da used my passion for music to connect me with the gift of His Enlightenment." ~ Crane Kirkbride, opera singer
"Only that which is loved is beautiful. ... The necessary essence of art is Love. ... Love must be the mother of
the arts, not architecture, not structure, not function. True art always involves the observer in the participatory
gesture of being, or what we call love." ~ Avatar Adi Da Samraj
"True art should permit and invite self-transcendence. True art is not merely the product of a hero or heroine
who is able to transcend himself or herself and create something which is then to be passively admired by
others. Participation in an art form should be a great exercise that enables you to transcend yourself. True art
has a purpose for others, not merely a purpose for the artist." ~ Avatar Adi Da Samraj

Ray, a devotee, is considered one of the most influencial artists in the field of new age
pop. He studied classical guitar in Barcelona & composition at the University of Texas.
In New York City he became a fixture in the early music scene as a lutenist with the
Renaissance Quartette. A spiritual crisis led from a withdrawal from conventional
classical music to experimenting with electronic music. His album "The Sky Of Mind"
joined classical music with spatial synthesized orchestrations & became an underground
success, let alone a groundbreaker in the field. It's follow-up "Deep Breakfast" was one
of the first New Age albums to sell over 500,000 copies. |

drafted & sent to Vietnam. Ironically, upon dropping out he was immediately drafted
but dismissed for health reasons. He joined the free-jazz group Love, Cry, Want which
would record with Herbie Hancock, John Abercrombie & Ralph Towner. He played with
many jazz greats including Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Tommy Flanagan, Billy
Eckstein, Astrud Gilberto, Freddie Hubbard, Herb Ellis, Milt Jackson & Mose Allison along
with touring with Roberta Flack in the 70's before finding long touring unpreferable &
thus focused much of his work on small tours & D.C. activities. He died in 2006. |
